A Remarkable Journey
When Phyllicia Thomas walked across the stage to accept her degree in environmental law in December 2023, it was the culmination of two journeys — one toward a dream set upon as a high school student and the other an unforeseen detour she navigated with determination and the steadfast support of her family. Thomas embarked on the second journey just over a year after graduating from the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences with a bachelor’s degree in environmental economics and management in May 2019.

Get Outdoors
A new club for students at the University of Georgia aims to celebrate the connections between Black students and the outdoors. Through on-campus discussions and off-campus field trips to state parks, Get Outdoors offers experiences couched in a context that can help students gain a deeper understanding of nature, sustainability, outdoor activities and the history of the land.

University of Georgia alumna Kirsten Allen was named a 2023 Quad Fellow, making her one of 100 international applicants in the fellowship’s inaugural cohort. The Quad Fellowship is a scholarship supporting interdisciplinary innovation in science and technology by connecting graduate students from the four Quad countries: Australia, India, Japan and the United States.

Farm Again
For many veterans, returning to civilian life is a stark shift from their fast-paced and service-based military life. When you combine this with the more than 4.7 million veterans who have service-based disabilities, the challenges of re-entry compound. The University of Georgia is working to assist Georgia’s veterans with this transition through its dynamic farming program, Farm Again.

IAspire Leadership Academy
The NSF INCLUDES Aspire Alliance, which engages a growing network of partners to support systemic change in the STEM higher education system, has announced the fourth cohort of 18 fellows in its IAspire Leadership Academy. The academy is designed to support STEM faculty from underrepresented backgrounds to ascend to leadership roles at colleges and universities.
UGA's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will host its convocation ceremony Thursday, May 12, at The Classic Center. UGA's commencement ceremonies will be held Friday, May 13, at Sanford Stadium for undergraduate students and Stegeman Coliseum for graduate students. CAES News

Ismahane Elouafi, the first chief scientist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, has nearly two decades of experience in agricultural research and development and is internationally known for her work on promoting neglected and underutilized crops, use of non-fresh water in agriculture, and empowerment of women in science.
