To expose 4-H’ers from medically underserved, rural Georgia to medical school, Georgia 4-H has created a program called “Setting Your Sights on Medical School.” Select students travel to Macon, Georgia, for an inside look at medical school through sessions led by Mercer University Medical School students and faculty.
Distracted driving is more than checking or sending text messages on your phone. It is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system or anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving. Taking your eyes off the road for five seconds at 55 miles per hour is like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Startling, but most of us have glanced at the GPS, grabbed our phone, reprimanded a child or even had a heated conversation, all while driving.  
Each year the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences offers paid research internships to Georgia high school students through the UGA Young Scholars Program. The application deadline for summer 2017's internships is Jan. 31. CAES News

High school students can explore the sciences through a variety of hands-on summer programs offered by the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES).
University of Georgia Research Professional David Mann works on a portable sequencer in food scientist Xiangyu Deng's laboratory in the UGA Center for Food Safety in Griffin, Georgia. Deng has developed a one-step method of detecting and subtyping food pathogens called “metagenomics analysis.” The method is much quicker than traditional methods, and time is essential during outbreaks of foodborne illness. Two of five Georgia Bio Awards presented last month to University of Georgia faculty were programs either in or affiliated with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES).
Liberty County 4-H member Sophia Rodriguez created the Tie Dye for Troops program to facilitate an open dialogue in which youths can explore and express their emotions. Rodriguez and fellow 4-H leaders visit the Fort Stewart School Age Centers each month to teach lessons on the importance of feelings, color and creativity. CAES News

Sophia Rodriguez, a Hinesville, Georgia, 4-H member, has been awarded the national 2018 4-H Youth in Action Healthy Living Pillar Award. Rodriguez received the award for her effort to promote the emotional well-being of children in military families through her Tie Dye for Troops program. She will be recognized at the National 4-H Council Legacy Awards in Washington, D.C., this month.
University of Georgia's Regenerative Bioscience Center and ArunA Biomedical scientists have developed a new treatment for stroke that reduces brain damage and accelerates the brain's natural healing tendencies in animal models. Led by UGA Professor Steven Stice and Nasrul Hoda of Augusta University, the team created a treatment called AB126 using extracellular vesicles (EV), fluid-filled structures known as exosomes, which are generated from human neural stem cells. The tiny tubular shape of an exosome allows EV therapy to cross barriers cells cannot. The exosomes, shown in the photo as small, red punctate clusters, are taken up by neurons, shown as green cell extensions surrounding a blue nucleus. CAES News

A team of researchers at the University of Georgia’s Regenerative Bioscience Center and ArunA Biomedical, a UGA startup company, have developed a new treatment for stroke that reduces brain damage and accelerates the brain’s natural healing tendencies in animal models.
University of Georgia Extension experts say that you should wash your hands for 20 seconds with warm soap and water to effectively clean them. Hand sanitizer is not a replacement for hand-washing. Sanitizer can be used in the event that soap and water are not available, but soap and water are always the best choice for hand-washing. CAES News
